A Promising Glimpse Into Modern Surf Instrumentals

The Screaming Seagulls are a band hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. They released a limited run of 20 lathe-cut 7" singles on white vinyl featuring Flight Of The Seagull (A side) and Taboo (B side).
“Flight Of The Seagull” kicks off with vintage twang and reverb, then the tempo slows before it explodes into a wall of surf instrumental sound with pounding drums and rolling bass. The guitar is sharp and powerful, transitioning from one passage to the next. This surf rock is full blast, with some tremolo, twang, and excellent runs as the cymbals crash like waves pounding the beach.
“Taboo” brings it all down a few levels with slow percussion and a guitar that takes its time setting the right mood. It’s a lazy day on your favorite deserted island, and the music paints that picture beautifully. The tribal drums set the path for the guitar’s twangy surf notes, and the pace is consistent from start to finish as you hold those images in your mind’s eye; you hear a seagull off in the distance as the track fades out.
In just two tracks, The Screaming Seagulls showcase an impressive range within surf instrumental music. Their sharp musicianship and crisp, clear production capture the genre's energy and atmosphere, leaving a memorable impression and hinting at even greater things to come.
