HCK is Música Surf de los Barrios de Mexico. The most recent release is VERA. I don’t know who the person is, and perhaps they want to remain anonymous, but I certainly enjoyed their music! I did some research and found a picture of a man playing guitar, although he is unidentified.
There is a story behind this music, and I will share it with you. I took this off the band’s Bandcamp page. Whether it makes a difference in your listening experience, I cannot say. Give it a listen, and you never know what will happen! I will go over each track; however, I thought it was important to relay this information first.
Vera doesn’t speak directly about her… but everything on this album exists because of Zarah. It’s an album about the process of letting go of someone who never truly left, because they stayed inside you. It’s not a story told outwardly; it’s something more internal… more honest… harder to explain. Zarah isn’t the center of the album; she’s the wound that gave it life. The name Vera represents something else: the truth that comes after the pain. When you can no longer lie to yourself… when you understand what was, what wasn’t, and what will never be again. This album isn’t about getting someone back. Nor is it about forgetting. It’s about acceptance.
“Vera” begins with a nice flow and a distinct Spanish-flavored surf-tinged guitar. This is a slow burner; however, the picking gets rapid at times, but the soft touch is maintained. It has a great rhythmic sensibility. As the track develops, the guitar becomes very transitory yet quite beautiful. The drums and bass are subtle but just right for the guitar lines that float over your speakers. What a great way to start, flawless musicianship.
“Umbral” (Threshold) continues with the fluid guitar playing. The notes seem to melt off the players’ fingers as the resonating, but gentle twang is enhanced by some synths in the background. The bass and drums are in sync and timely, supporting the fine guitar playing that paints pictures in your mind’s eye.
“Ruidos” (Noise) makes a significant move to a faster tempo at all positions. The guitar is always at the forefront, steering the ship as the other sounds are subtly folded in for a lovely, layered effect that this man excels at. This one is surfier than the previous tracks.
“Sombras” (Shadows) is another big change and perhaps their own tribute to the legendary band The Shadows. This is a gorgeously rendered instrumental with more twang and reverb than any track so far. Classic surf-rock instrumental, flying high and totally infectious!
“Nostalgia” needs no translation, and it will bring you back to wherever you desire. The tempo is sublime, and the guitar simply calls out to you with its bright and hypnotic notes. There are some amazing six-string pickings on display here.
“Recuerdos: (Memories) follows nicely from the
previous track about meaning and looking back. The tempo is steady; however,
the guitar’s sound has changed considerably here due to the effect and pedal
used. It’s a nice change and shows the diversity of their playing.
“Zarah” refers to someone other than Vera. The decidedly subtle approach brings color and meaning to the track titles. In this case, it feels like a loving tribute and an expression of gratitude. The guitar’s resonant tones ring true once again before the curtain closes on this recording.
VERA is a cinematic and atmospheric album, driven by hypnotic guitar work and supported by a rhythm section that provides just the right amount of depth to the infectious melodies. It stands out as laid-back, Latin-influenced surf instrumental rock that invites repeated listening and rewards close attention.
