Surf Rock Instrumental Review: Mala Onda- The EP

Mala Onda- The EP'

A Fresh Wave in Modern Surf Rock

Mala Onda is a rising instrumental three-piece band based out of Miami, Florida. Formed in the spring of 2025, they describe their sound as an experimental, high-energy fusion of Surf, Skate, and Punk Rock.

While the band is fresh, the musicians are seasoned; each member boasts a history of creating and performing music dating back more than a decade. Together, they share a fierce passion for redefining the Surf Rock genre.

Mala Onda is Spanish for "Bad Vibe." However, after listening to The EP, the only bad vibe I could detect was the cover art!

“South Shore” begins with a soft, acoustic, Latin-flavored strum. Within seconds, it transforms into a high-energy rocker, with that lovely acoustic sprinkling its magic over the top of driving electric runs. Later, the acoustic takes center stage while the bass and drums roll along, before the track comes full circle with a heavy electric finish. It is a brilliant mixture of surf, rock, and Latino influences, highlighted by rapid picking and seamless guitar transitions.

“Doomsday” starts beautifully with another acoustic riff before quickly launching into a raunchy, fuzzed-out rocker. With a title like that, you need darkness and power—and that is exactly what they dish out. Yet, the track is highly nuanced, featuring several transitions where the guitar shifts from flat-out rocking to incredibly tasteful, melodic movements. I really enjoy how much they manage to meld into a single track. It features more clever changes than you could imagine, and it’s quite excellent. (I even caught a passage that reminded me of Blondie’s “One Way or Another!”)

“Negative Impact (N.I.)” is like Davie Allan on steroids! The drums and bass attack from the jump, pummeling a rhythm that perfectly accentuates the hard-rocking, fuzzy guitar lines. It is brutal, heavy, and magnificent.

“Nightshade” sounds like a different band altogether, showing off their incredible versatility. Here, they scale things back to create an atmospheric, tasty, surfy treat. Warm-weather notes float effortlessly as the bass and drums transform into restrained instruments of pure pleasure. This track proves the band can flip a switch, delivering something hauntingly beautiful right after a knock-your-socks-off rocker. Clocking in at almost five minutes, it serves as a true showcase of their musical talent.

“Shark Attack,” as you might imagine from the title, returns to a more aggressive style—yet it still carves out a unique sound. An awesome bassline drives the track forward while the cymbals and drums crash around guitars that shift shapes in short, sharp bursts. At one point toward the end, the energy beautifully recalled the surf-rock styling of Slacktone.

Mala Onda’s debut EP is an impressive showcase of a trio bursting with creativity and confidence. Their ability to pack so many dynamic shifts and inventive ideas into each track keeps every single moment fresh and engaging. They are not only ready to share their music with a wider audience, but they are also well-poised to leave a lasting mark on the modern surf rock scene.
