Label: Reverb Brazil
Spectrum #5 is the Surfuzzes' first 7'' EP. This is another band on the Reverb Brazil label everyone should know about if you happen to enjoy modern surf rock!
Note the exceptional cover art with the nod to Brazil!
“Spectrum #5” starts strangely with weird sounds and voice, then it kicks right in with some hard-rockin’ surf sounds. The twang is there, but it’s not your typical style that’s going on here. This is crystal-clear, crisp licks. If you like rock, this is going to be your jam!
“Furens” translates from Latin to English as “raging” or “raving.” This is where the band transitions to a more traditional surf melody while maintaining their trademark modern rock style. It’s a good mixture that I thoroughly enjoyed.
“Retorno das Ondas” translates to “Return of the Waves.” Here, they remind you again why they are considered surf instro with modern rock twang. I liked the effects used on this one. The pedals they are using form an echoing, distorted sound. It has a kind of sci-fi/horror motif, if you will. This is a downtempo track compared to the two previous. This band has its chops down; I have no doubt.
“Cybermotion” closes out the 7” EP with ultra-fast riffs and a locomotive rhythm section. This is a kick ass surf instro track! Traditional surf with rock mixed again, and highly entertaining!
The Surfuzzes are a powerhouse surf rock band, pushing the genre forward by fusing first-wave influences with a strong modern rock backbone. Their sound is fresh and dynamic, leaving me eager to hear what they’ll do next.
