Surf-Instrumental-Rock Review: The Knights-Then And Now

www.lancerecords.com

Dick Stewart's unwavering dedication to music, production, and writing for over four decades, all under his label, Lance Records, is a shining example of passion and commitment to his craft. His relentless pursuit of musical excellence is truly inspiring.

Stewart embodies the spirit and energy of the independent music community and its relationship to the Internet. His son Jason, who happens to be one of the brightest young guitar players on the planet, also occasionally works with his father.

The Knights, a trio consisting of Dick Stewart (guitar), Gary Snow (bass), and Steve Hudgins (drums), have been at work for several years now. Their relationship goes far beyond the music; you can feel that warmth in every track on this CD. The Knights' unique blend of surf and instrumental rock, a sound that is truly their own, is evident in their latest album.

Then And Now is a conceptual album that compares the old with the new, reflecting on the evolution of music and technology. The best examples of the parallels and effects of modern technology are the songs "Moonbeam," "Cut Out 1964," and "Precision 1964."

Each song has a Y2K counterpart, showcasing the transition from traditional to modern sounds. Son Jason lets it rip on "The Calm and The Storm." I knew instantly it was Jason as the first notes came blaring through my speakers. This guy can rock and is one of the best unknown guitarists actively making music today.

Dick Stewart's unique ability to blend traditional surf-instrumental music with the more modern sounds of today, a sound he helped create, is a testament to his musical prowess. His sequencing of tracks is a stroke of genius, adding an element of excitement and intrigue to the final product. His talent is truly something to be appreciated.

The lead-off track, "Sons Of Beaches," which is much more than just a play on words, is the perfect opener for this recording. Stewart knows how to set up the listener and prepare them for what will come next. This is great surf, rock, and instrumental music with a timeless quality.

The album showcases Stewart's mastery of traditional surf instrumental music and his ability to blend the sixties surf sound with the modern sounds of today. That's why he decided to give you the best of both periods so that you can see the value and appreciate where he came from and where he is now. Many men his age would have disappeared years ago, but he keeps going.

I have been enjoying this man's musical collaborations through my stereo system and colorful conversations via phone and email for many years now. I hope that it continues.

Surf Tribute To Burt Bacharach! - That's New Pussycat

Are you in the mood for something different? Let me rephrase that: Are you looking for something that marches to a different drummer, that's slightly weird and off-color? This Surf Tribute To Burt Bacharach!

That's New Pussycat fits all of those descriptions and more. The cover alone is a good indication of what you are in for.

The surf-instro world has been quite adventurous lately, covering everything from Bach to Bacharach. The instrumental segment of this compilation is brilliantly done. I wish I could to say the same for the groups that decided to sing. Some of the vocals are dreadful. Then, in the same token, some of the vocals are excellent and perfect for the composer's songs, a good example is the tracks with the lovely female background vocals complementing the instrumentals.

That is perfectly appropriate for a Bacharach interpretation. I am sure Mr. Bacharach is flattered that he has been honored with a tribute from such an unlikely genre. I am not sure he would appreciate how some of his greatest songs have been turned upside down to sound like punk and alternative music, though. It's noted that some of these groups are not surf-instro groups, and do not claim to be. This may be a very good reason why some of this music doesn't sound as good as it could be.

For the most part, this was a delightful disc. How can you miss with twenty-five tracks? That's more than enough music for anyone to choose from. Some of the premier surf-instro groups appear- Susan and The Surftones, Pollo Del Mar, Fifty Foot Combo, and the Tiki Tones- some of the names you will quickly notice gracing this unusual compilation. There was plenty for me to sink my teeth into on this CD. All criticism aside, this was a lot of fun to listen to. These ears appreciated all the effort and time that went into this project. Any guitar freak would revel in this vast expanse of saltwater refreshment.

Granted, this is different and veers off the beaten path a bit. The one attribute surf-instro music has that can't be taken away is its uncanny flexibility and ability to mold any music into something that sounds like it belongs within the framework of the genre's particular sound and style.

Some of this music is undoubtedly as fantastic and enjoyable as it gets. It will make any surf-instro fan smile and come back for more.

*A Special Thanks To Susan Yasinski of Susan and The Surftones for providing me with a copy of this CD for review!

Surf Instro Review: Trapped In Hyperspace With... Destination: Earth!

https://www.facebook.com/destinationearth

After performing in front of vast quantities of human life forms and having no desire to return to their home planet, Destination Earth! has decided to give the earthlings what they clamor for, music in the form of Trapped In Hyperspace With...

The carbon-based units require excessive theatrics, good music, and fun and entertainment to sustain their population. The group provides all of that by dressing up as spacemen and acting out a play-by-play script of intrigue and excitement.

The music found on this CD is not of this world. Whoever heard of a surf-instro group that could sing, and do it well? You will witness the proof when you hear one of the best songs on this disc, "Alien Loveslave."

If that doesn't satisfy your saltwater palette, then all the instro numbers will give you a supercharged rocket ride around the universe. It's a two-way ticket. Influences vary from third wave to traditional. The theme is like that of Man or Astro-Man.

This group is having the time of their lives and making great music. With Destination Earth, you get the best of both worlds (theirs and ours)—an outright stage show and echoing surf-spy-instro ringing in your ears. Yes, life is good on earth these days.

Surf-Rock Instro Review : 3 Balls Of Fire - The Best Of The Balls (1988-1998) 10th Anniversary Edition

https://www.3ballsoffire.com/

The 3 Balls of Fire is a group of exceptionally talented musicians known for their fiery guitar performances. Their latest achievement is the release of a compilation CD that is a true testament to their instrumental prowess, titled The Best Of The Balls (1988-1998) 10th Anniversary Edition.

Ten years is a long stretch, especially when picking and choosing the best tracks within that time frame. This CD contains fourteen tracks of this group's best.

I had never heard of this group until now; I don't know why. The 3 Balls of Fire are as good as any instro group I have ever heard, better than most. So why haven't I heard of them, you ask? I'm baffled that I haven't.

They come from a literal hotbed of music, Austin, Texas. They most definitely haven't got the national acclaim that they deserve. Unlike hundreds of other local bands strewn about the country, they are good enough to be recognized as a top-flight act. Whether or not that ever happens for them remains to be seen. Too many variables contribute to a group's success; unfortunately, one of the most critical points isn't always a factor: the group is outstanding.

This CD is a masterpiece! As a passionate fan of instrumental music, this compilation perfectly fits my musical preferences. The 3 Balls of Fire have genuinely outdone themselves with this one.

The most attractive concept about any instrumental music is its flexibility and ability to blend diverse styles to invent a new sound and style. The 3 Balls of Fire's music is a conglomerate of surf, rock, blues, and R&B played with spirit.

They can get it cookin' or slow it down to display their versatility and any subtle nuances a number may have. Those very factors require immense talent and patience to produce.

It's a shame I didn't hear about these guys ten years ago, but that doesn't matter now. Now I know who they are and can enjoy their music, and so can you! After hearing this overview of their career, I am sure you will seek more material from this group soon.

Surf-Rock-Instro Review: Melenhead - Self-Titled

Let's talk about Melenhead's self-titled CD, a game-changer in Surf-Rock-Instro. The pumping and driving saxophone, just like it was meant to be, has redefined the genre's formative years. The sax, a welcome addition to the instrumental scene, has changed how the music is played forever, and Melenhead is at the forefront of this revolution.

Melenhead is a band that's not just good but exceptional. James Dziubia's horn skills (tenor and baritone saxophone) are nothing short of awe-inspiring, and he's backed by the equally talented Colin Kenny (lead guitar), Doug Leibinger (bass, baritone saxophone), and Stewart Jean (drums). Their collective talent serves up a well-balanced attack of rock and intro that's a testament to their skill and dedication.

The saxophone's poignancy is prevalent in each song, changing the feeling and atmosphere with a richness and flavor that I find beyond compare. The saxophone's soulful sound, often associated with R&B and Soul, flows like a river through the elemental foundations of surf and rock, adding emotional depth to the music.

It's interesting when you listen to such simple and free music, how it can become so ever-changing and complex with adding one instrument. When one looks at that one aspect it doesn't change the fact that it remains, and is, kick ass rock n' roll music. Alas, many facets are found within the music if you can listen well enough.

I could feel the warmth of the sun and a cold glass of lemonade traveling down my throat. Oh, the visionary power of music—isn't it beautiful? This set my soul free. It may be temporary, but it felt terrific while it lasted.

Susan And The Surftones - This Ain't No Beachparty!-7" Vinyl EP

https://susanandthesurftones.com/

Fresh off a successful overseas tour, Susan and The Surftones have assembled a four-song 7" vinyl EP titled This Ain't No Beachparty! It's a special 2000 tour edition.

The best time to record is when a group is in a groove from touring; one listen will validate that!

This group shows no signs of slowing down. A killer version of "Baja" jump-starts this whole thing, and they never take their foot off the gas. The surf-instro on this platter is the best you could find.

The group corrals the tremendous power of surf music. They use everything at their disposal. The group's innate ability to combine the several dimensions of the genre into each tune is a valuable asset. The traditional sound is paid homage to and respected, while the new edge is employed to make it pop and crackle. This music has the effervescence of a cool ocean wave.

Susan and the Surftones nail it on this release. They are locked in on four successive waves of dynamite surf!

Surf and Rock Review: Lombego Surfers-Let It Rip

https://lombegosurfers.net/

When Anthony Lombego sings, he sounds like the legendary New York Doll Johnny Thunders. When he plays the guitar, it's whoa! The title of the CD says it all: Let It Rip.

When vocals are part of the scheme of things, the group sounds nothing like a surf-instro group. They are punk-rock-garage through and through. On the flip side, it was special when Lombego and his troops decided to go the surf-rock route. There isn't a sound that can match the incredible power of surf combined with electrifying rock. This trio is locked in and comes at you with both barrels on this release.

I have always enjoyed the diversity of this group, but I must admit that the instro side is what tickles my fancy. The cuts on this CD are the best I have heard from this group. Once they get you in a groove with their signature punk-garage style, a raw and energetic sound reminiscent of the underground punk scene of the 70s, they switch to what they are best equipped to dish out, monster swells of surf-rock-instro!

One can't help but wonder how their instrumental tunes would sound unplugged. They would retain and enhance their impact with a twist.

Lombego's guitar work is exceptional, and it would easily transition to acoustic without losing any of its power. Their potential for making an impact acoustically could pique my curiosity and may do the same for you.

It's time for America to discover the Lombego Surfers, a band that brings a fresh and unique sound to the punk, garage, and surf rock genres. Their new CD, Let It Rip, is a testament to their musical prowess and a release that should not be missed.

Surf Instro Review: The O' Hara's-Devil's Desert

Welcome to the Devil's Desert, the hottest place on Earth. This music roars at you like a ball of fire, letting you know it has arrived. The O'Hara's are a steaming locomotive headed your way filled with twang, reverb, and feedback. The group launches its all-out attack of flamenco-tinged surf-rock-instro upon your restless reverb-starved soul with 10 tracks of red-hot instro madness.

This is not music for steadfast traditional surf lovers. It is an onslaught and reworking of anything traditional. Of course, everything we hear today is just an extension of the music created back in the '60s. All due respect is given to that era and its importance to the genre.

I enjoy the electricity and abandon of this style of surf-instro. At times, the pace can be frenetic and offbeat. Only the true lover of instrumental guitar will appreciate this onslaught upon the eardrums. With talent like this, there is plenty of room for improvisation. Expect more noise from this group in the future.

It's one wild ride.

Surf Instro Review: Thee Andrews Surfers - Rip-Off!

Rip Off! is a statement that's heard loud and clear. It is heard through the intensity of the music and the sincere and truthful liner notes provided by King Koen. I concur with the thoughts expressed in the enlightening commentary.

There is plenty of high gloss, overproduced crap that is making millions right now. If you are getting sucked into the mainstream and haven't had a good reality check lately, wake up!

Don't drown in the sea of pretty faces of talent created by technology and advertisements. They want you to buy into their plastic world (i.e., "Two Minutes To Rip You Off"). This is not a factor when listening to a powerful platter of super-charged surf-instro like Thee Andrews Surfers provide.

This raw and exciting session of surf-instro by Thee Andrews Surfers is a testament to their spontaneity and originality. Their music covers most of the sub-genres, providing a perfect variety. A few cleverly created sounds are born from this spontaneity and creativity. They breathe new life into forties standards within the instro realm. The elements of surf, instro, garage, trash, and punk are all woven into this driven and invigorating source of musical delight, making it a must-listen for any music enthusiast.

It was nice to hear something new and fresh. The harmonica is used in place of the usual organ or saxophone, which makes this a new and refreshing experience. The extreme varieties are a joy to hear when the group can use more than one influence within a song. This works for me. This is a great CD; get it.

Surf Instrumental Review: The Capacitors-Cybersurf

The Capacitors are the marvelously entertaining robot (computer-generated) surf-instro band that can be found roaming about in cyberspace.

This is their tribute to science fiction and their apparent affinity for the group Man or an Astroman. The influence of many different groups can be heard when listening to this CD.

The group members are designated as the 01, 02, and 03 units. Yes, they are flesh and blood, but don't spoil the fun, OK?

Their music powerfully homages the '60s sound, covering various sub-genres. The Capacitors' unique twist on the classic sound is evident in their instantly recognizable tunes from the '60s, cleverly renamed to fit the group's theme.

The original songs are packed with frequent, powerful bursts and consistent energy, showcasing the band's signature style. The Capacitors have truly carved a niche in cyberspace and my heart.

Surf Instrumental Review: The Spartans-Yiannis Chronopoulos Heavenly Dreams

The Spartans bring you traditional Greek music on their Heavenly Dreams release. Yiannis Chronopoulos plays the bouzouki, and he truly makes it sound heavenly. Tonu Sepp handles keyboards and programming, while Kostas Chloros plays acoustic guitar, providing Yiannis with a nice rhythmic layer to place his tasteful bouzouki notes.

What's so interesting about this music is that the group takes a few instrumental surf songs, then shapes, molds, and develops them into an original Spartan tune. The most notable song is "Misirlou," the Dick Dale classic. Yiannis has been playing his chosen instrument for twenty-five years now. The sounds that he extracts from the strings would be the envy of any guitar-oriented musician. As Kostas says in the liner notes, "It's a sound that stirs the blood and enters the soul."

These will be some of the most incredibly different and lively adaptations of traditional Greek music today. Now I understand why this genre inspires artists who play surf-instrumental music.

With the native blood flowing through their hearts, the group expresses and portrays their culture sincerely through music. This CD is a trip to another world.

Surf Instrumental Review: The Surf Kings - Up From The Depths

https://www.thesurfkings.com/home

Tom Stanton, the founder of the sixties surf group the Crossfires, has reemerged in the surf-instro world with a bang. The Surf Kings have finally unveiled their much-anticipated new CD, Up From The Depths. I remember the excitement when I first spoke with Tom as the recording began in the Fall of '99. The wait for this CD has been filled with eager anticipation, and I can confidently say it was well worth it.

For those yet to experience The Surf Kings' unique sound, it's a delightful blend of various genres, all harmoniously rolled into one cohesive package. Their sound, reminiscent of The Mermen, combines the explosive energy of Slacktone with the versatility and eclectic approach of The Reventlos. Some may detect a hint of psychedelia, but it's not overpowering. Instead, it's like a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered. The CD guides the listener: “For the best experience, play this CD as loud as possible!” And trust me, you should.

Never has a trio sounded so powerful. The addition of more instruments would only dilute their brilliance. Tom Stanton's transition to the 3rd wave sound is seamless, and he hasn't missed a beat. He stands shoulder to shoulder with, if not above, his contemporaries, including the fastest gunslingers. I'm confident this album will be among the top five surf-instro collections this year, a testament to the trio's musical prowess.

One of my favorites is the song "Tears for the Dolphin." It's a shimmering spectacle of sound that will remind you of something that The Aqua Velvets would do; it's just gorgeous. Pretty pictures are painted, and the beauty of the ocean is captured as tidal waves of sound come rolling in again and again, accompanied by a perfectly crafted rockin' surf instro.

If you enjoy a soft touch or a hard and fast tsunami of sound, this fabulous trio of musicians expertly accomplishes it all. Tom Stanton (lead guitar), Pat Raymond (bass), and Rico Veale (drums) have reason to smile after creating such awe-inspiring work. The only disappointing aspect of this experience was that it had to end.

Surf-Rock-Instrumental Review: Jerry Swallow - Teleride

From The Diamonds to Tanya Tucker to Teleride, Jerry Swallow's musical journey is a testament to his versatility and dedication. He began his career with a surf group, The Diamonds, and spent five years as Tanya Tucker's lead guitarist, with many other experiences in between. This is just a glimpse of the long and storied road that has led him to where he is now, playing in the group Diamondback and presenting his solo CD, Teleride.

Jerry Swallow cuts loose on this album with a world of experience and professional gigs behind him. Swallow's colorful and varied experiences as a musician quickly become evident in his music. He can craft a unique surf-instro, rock, country, and R&B style that remains consistently strong throughout the entire listen.

Jerry's sound is clear, stinging, and echoing; it's a unique blend of genres that will pique your interest. It is a rich tapestry of influences and is synonymous with the Telecaster guitar and surf-intro music. Whether you're a fan of fat chords or the loud and biting ones that cut like a knife, Jerry's music has something for everyone, all delivered with a certain refinement that can only be found with those specially gifted musicians.

Wait until you hear the versions of "Walk Don't Run" and "Apache." Wow! I am accustomed to repeatedly hearing note-for-note cover renditions of the same songs, so this is a real treat.

The essential elements of the music remain intact, but Jerry adds a unique flavor and sound with his fabulous blend of styles. He fervently attacks the songs, infusing them with his signature clear, stinging, and echoing sound, and changes the whole number into a new and refreshing version that's all his own.

This triumphant solo release deserves worldwide attention from the surf-instro scene, and I am confident it will.

Who needs coffee in the morning when you can kickstart your day with the invigorating sound of Jerry Swallow's Teleride? This album is a high-energy, rock-infused experience that will leave you buzzing.

Surf Instrumental Review: The Mulchmen Covered With Mulch (unique cassette only release)

https://www.facebook.com/mulchmen/

The Mulchmen’s Covered With Mulch is a project in tribute to Tim Taylor, a good friend of the group who was killed in an auto accident in 1997. The misfortune was not to end for the group as drummer Greg Spence succumbed to cancer in January of this year. However, these tragic losses only highlighted the group's unwavering dedication to their music.

The tape was produced in 1998, the last session before the release of Greetings From Planet Stupider. The music continues to live on, a testament to The Mulchmen's resilience and love for music.

One side of music is a typically driven and assorted mix of instro delights covered with mulch. The flipside is a tribute to Link Wray and his music. When you think you know what to expect, wait until you hear "Jack the Ripper," Mulchmen style. The boys put some well-known Led Zeppelin riffs into the song to catch you off guard and rock you more than expected. It was a delightful surprise and was done amidst all the insanity that only a good instro tune can deliver. Their unique musical style is sure to intrigue and captivate any music enthusiast.

This group has undoubtedly carved out a unique niche in the genre, marked by originality and creativity. Their music, characterized by specific, unique elements, has gained the plaudits of the critical mass and the utmost respect of their peers, a testament to their exceptional contribution to the music world.

Instrumental Surf Review: Randy Holden-Surf Guitar God 2001

Randy Holden, the self-proclaimed guitar god, has a special treat for his fans who remember him from his days playing guitar with a surf-instrumental group called The Fender IV.

Yes, Mr. Holden has been around the block a few times. Calling himself a guitar god sounds like pretty heady stuff. Well, let me tell you, he can back up every word of it. And his guitar playing is a living testament to the title of the seven-track Surf Guitar God 2001.

Holden is not the classic once-bitten, twice-shy indie artist; he got screwed enough to make him reevaluate the music business. Back in his days with Blue Cheer, around the time Woodstock made history, some events nearly pushed a great artist to extinction. The self-imposed exile lasted for twenty years, and then he emerged from it, thank God. (There is a lot to that story in my interview.)

Holden is fiercely independent and motivated to succeed, and he has achieved this with great success. Holden himself painted the cover of this CD. As you can see, he is a very talented man.

Talking with Randy made me realize what a deep and sensitive artist he is. He is the consummate guitar player and technician. I referred to "Prayer To Paradise" in a previous review as a jam, and he quickly set me straight in an interview I conducted with him. He told me it was a sonata, not a jam. Jams are disorganized, and he loathes disorganization when he creates music. It makes perfect sense to me, and I learned the actual value of his creations in the process.

There are some great songs on this CD. "Prayer To Paradise" and all the other extraordinary compositions belong on this disc. For instance, "Hawaiian Rain," which epitomizes a tropical rainstorm, is the difference between getting showered with actual raindrops and an awe-inspiring blend of guitar chords. It beckons images of the beautiful island in your mind's eye.  The notes come raining down upon your consciousness.

"Highway Surfer" and "Malibu Run" combine traditional surf and modern elements nicely. I realize that seven tracks don't look like a long-running CD, but do not be deceived by this. "Prayer to Paradise" runs 23:54, and "Hawaiian Rain" is 17:04. The rest of the songs are typically two minutes long, which is standard for the genre.

I have come to truly admire this man, not only for his complete artistry but also for his unyielding spirit and strength. He is a great man, playing great music. Anyone who can paint a picture like the one on the cover of this CD, enabling you to see it by listening to the music, has a gift that needs to be shared. Thanks for sharing your gifts with me, Randy.

Surf Instro Review: Laika & The Cosmonauts-Laika Sex Machine…taped before a LIVE! Audience (1997,1998)

Laika Sex Machine? I don't know what that's all about, but this group from Finland remains one of the best surf-intro groups actively recording music today. After several years of releasing standout studio recordings, the group offers their faithful following a live recording that showcases a taste of their entire catalog.

Laika Sex Machine…taped before a LIVE! Audience (1997, 1998) is twenty-six tracks of traditional surf and third-wave instrumental diamonds. This CD is a relentless attack upon your eardrums. It's a rockin' good time. I loved every minute of it.

This band has a good handle on presenting its music brand. With elements of both new and old blending into its sound, you get the best of both worlds—and then some.

“Then some” is the undefined live element. Those who make the magic happen can understand the spontaneity of a live performance. As mortal listeners, we get all the pleasures from the results of that mystical knowledge that only the gifted musician has. In my opinion, all music possesses a spiritual quality. Surf-instro is fun, energetic, and picturesque. Even though it's lighthearted, it remains the thinking man's music.

The sound and production are brilliant, and Laika and The Cosmonauts' performances are fantastic. It is the quintessential live surf-instro recording. Go ahead and be a sex machine—get this CD.

Surf-Instrumental Review: The Aqua Velvets-Nomad

Website

Michael Lindner (bass, accordion, keyboards), Miles Corbin (electric & acoustic guitar, trashcan bongo), Don Spindt (drums), and Hank Maninger (rhythm guitar) are The Aqua Velvets. It is their third release, Nomad.

The title track sets the tone, starting things off on the right foot with a trademark shimmering desert journey through instrumental music. It draws influences from surf, spy, Middle Eastern, spaghetti western, and rock genres. Of course, it’s complete with twang and reverb.

“Holly Tiki” is just over two minutes long. The group rips through a successive progression of guitar chords in that short period, giving you the typically compact, high-energy intro song.

“Summer at Dreampoint” really says what this group is about without a single word. It’s a picturesque adventure, taking you on a summertime ride through the scenery of your choice.  It’s an absolute classic.

Music like this has a prevailing impact. It will leave a lasting impression on your consciousness. Instrumental music is for those who enjoy having their intellect stimulated. This music will shake out those cobwebs and revitalize your mind quickly.

Hailing from the Bay Area, the group has the advantage of dipping into a diverse musical melting pot. Having a wide range of resources to help along the creative process and initiate ideas never hurts. They do a dynamite job utilizing every musical genre to shape and mold the music that becomes all their own. It’s pure instrumental bliss.
