Surf-Rock-Pop Instro Review: Seks Bomba - Operation B.O.M.B.A.

Seks Bomba's Operation B.O.M.B.A. is a play on original motion picture scores, with all the suspense and adventure of the spy thriller movies it emulates. This CD presents an exciting and explosive sound.

The music encompasses surf, rock, lounge, and a fair bit of pop. The vocals are perfect for this setting, as they make you feel like a young boy sitting in the movie theater getting a thrill watching 007 smooch all the beautiful girls. Yes, this young man did just that. In my heart, I would like nothing more than to return to those days. Music like this really takes me there.

The music is more than appropriate for a spy flick; it fits like a glove. The group does a nice job switching from a rocking instrumental jaunt to a lounge, sexy spy song—the kind where he gets the girl. Need I continue? I found this to be a very upbeat production. It made me feel great, and I was smiling inside.

The result is that the music accomplishes what it sets out to do. It sets the mood for the movie soundtracks that it spoofs and runs you through the gamut of emotions, like it is supposed to.

This is such a strong effort from Seks Bomba. The music would get your heart pumping, and the movies would be secondary. This excellent work deserves all the recognition and accolades that all the great soundtracks get, even if it is a spoof!

Kick—ASSS Surf, Garage, and Desperate Rock n' Roll Review - Achtung Spitfire Schnell Schnell!!! DEMO 99'

 http://achtung-spitfire.de/

Note: For some reason, I did not note the track titles when I wrote this review; however, I did find a good stream on Bandcamp with Rarities and Demos that is worth checking out, and their website is active!

The group has coined its music as Kick—ASSS Surf, Garage, and Desperate Rock n' Roll, a unique blend that sets it apart. Hailing from Germany, it has crafted an exceptional demo to captivate prospective record labels.

This enhanced CD features six tracks, each a testament to its distinct sound, and includes QuickTime video clips and other surprises for your enjoyment.

The group has enormous potential, and I would be shocked and disappointed if they weren't recognized as the spirited and energetic group they are. They rock and roll, bang, twang, and burn the house down on this impressive debut.

Considering this is a demo, I was impressed with the sound, professionalism, and all the efforts to make it an actual multimedia experience.

The group has a strong following overseas and is very active on the concert circuit. Playing many gigs is the best way to hone your chops and make a name for yourself. ASSS is fired and ready to come to the U.S. and cut a full-length CD.

I've recommended the group to my friends at Del-Fi, and there's a chance you'll hear a track from them on Del-Fi's second Surf Monsters release this Fall. I'm eagerly anticipating this and keeping my fingers crossed for them. So, get ready to engage with the group on their website and be part of their journey.

Surf-Rock-Pop Review: Shots In The Dark - Various Artists

The resurgence of Del-Fi has significantly contributed to the growth of the surf music genre. They are a quality outfit.  Shots In The Dark is more progressive '90s new wave surf—great blends of guitar, organ, and the ever-present thundering drums.

This is not traditional surf instro by any means. I like the CD. I like just about everything that Del-Fi puts out, anyway. This is different, which is why I enjoy it so much.

Del-Fi's reinterpretation of old classics with a modern twist, making them sound more contemporary, is a fascinating aspect of their music. And who's the stunning woman on the cover? None other than Bob Keane's (Owner of Del-Fi) daughter!

She looks like she is waiting for 007. And while waiting, would you like a drink? Oh, yes, shaken, not stirred, please.

Surf and Rock Instrumental Review: Delphonic Sounds Of Today - Various Artists

Have you experienced the unique blend of old surf tunes with a 90s twist? If not, you're in for a treat. Del-Fi is back with another exceptional compilation CD, blending the best of both eras. Their consistency in delivering such unique blends is commendable, and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

Man or Astroman? The Tiki Tones and Los Straitjackets, among others, deliver stellar performances, as expected from these top-tier surf groups. Davie Allan and The Arrows' rendition of "Our Favorite Martian" is a standout, arguably one of the most amazing surf tunes ever recorded.

This has a 90s feel, yet it can also convey the sound of the era. This is no small task, considering that many groups do not use vintage equipment, such as classic Fender guitars and vintage tube amplifiers, which are integral to the sound of surf music.

If you want to tune into the third wave of surf and enjoy the old classics, you will love this! I did. It's very cool. Their performances are sure to leave you in awe.

You can get it on Amazon for a very low price if you're interested!

Hola Ghost Review and Interview With Peter Sandorff - The Man They Couldn’t Hang… (Surf-Rock-Mexican Death Metal)

https://www.holaghost.com

The Man They Couldn't Hang... is Hola Ghost's second album. The band's label, Hola Pete Records, released it on vinyl in 2009 and reissued it by Svart Records in 2019. It's back on two vinyl variants: red/black splatter and transparent red.

Hola Ghost was formed as a duo by Peter Sandorff (ex-Nekromantix and Mad Sin) and long-time friend Jeppe B. Jessen to work on the soundtrack for LA-bound artist Gris Grimlys' debut movie, Cannibal Flesh Riot.

Hola Ghost's Mexican Death Metal is in full bloom on this killer vinyl release. I've labeled it Rock, Metal, and Surf with a Spanish flavor, but none of these descriptors work. The unique blend of these genres is a testament to the band's versatility and will surely pique your interest.

What I appreciated the most was how they layered their sound, particularly with the guitar. The many changes they make are impressive and entertaining, and they do it skillfully throughout this recording.

Side A begins with their theme song, "Hola Ghost." The driving surf-tinged opener features elements of Spanish flavor and breaks by guitar picking back and forth to the faster parts. The energetic rhythm section makes this a great starter and introduction to the band's sound, leaving you salivating for the next one.

"Spanish Moon" has a strumming guitar beginning for this semi-ballad. The horns from hell enter the picture, then a momentary lapse of sounds, it kicks into higher gear with a faster tempo, and then it reverts to the more mellow atmosphere with the guitars weaving their spell, swaying back and forth. The instrumental section, effects-filled guitar, incredible drums, and bass, do their job and then return to the beginning.

"The Man They Couldn't Hang" is a personal favorite. The catchy guitar licks form a soundtrack to a classic Western film, and the dark subject matter adds depth to the track. This standout piece is just one of the many gems waiting to be discovered on this album.

"Mulo Esqueleto Volante" (translated Flying Skeleton Mule) starts cranking with their trademark Spanish flavorings. Of course, the surf rock guitar is rocking. A woman is speaking in Spanish throughout. Otherwise, this is an absolute banger instrumental. I loved the guitar effects.

"Marguerita" is another one that became one of my instant favorites. It segues from the previous track, so it's a nice transition. The guitars and horns merge to create the Spanish storm, with the music blazing hot for this woman who is the subject of the man's great affection. Guitars are charging all the time, and all at a rapid pace. This is a rockin' love song. It slows down at the end and fades out, but I don't think his love for Marguerita does.

"Alligator Girl" is a short run with some interesting lyrics. A soft acoustic guitar song about another woman moves along sweetly for his alligator girl. It catches you off guard and is an unexpected way to end the first side of the LP.

"Stay Awake" jumps in at the beginning of side B. It picks up the pace immediately after the slower curtain closer from Side A. It's cranking and gets your blood moving fast with their rockin' Spanish flair. Expressive vocals populate the air, and there is an instrumental break, slowdown, and then an intro to the band members. It then starts moving again, and in an offbeat way, then a chant of Hey! Hey! Along with a driving rhythm and guitars with a surfy sound.

"Dragon Balls" is a showcase of the band's outstanding musicianship. The guitar wails, the drum beat forms the core, and the Dick Dale-like runs add a unique touch. The layers of instrumentation and significant transitions demonstrate the band's skill and dedication to their craft.

"Cannibal Flesh Riot" has an atmospheric entry. The guitar comes in heavy with some screaming, and then there's a big switch to a jangling guitar. It then changes in tempo with many changes and variants of the guitar's sound and rhythm. An exciting and interesting mix. It ends abruptly.

"Six Bullets" opens with drums and a strong, thick guitar sound as Peter screams, "See You in Hell!" This is a heavy rocker with a bit of surf around the periphery. There is a break for a slowdown and mellow guitar now, a tasteful lick or two, then a segue into the album closer.

"Night of the Vampire" is a perfect ending to an ideal performance. There is a great intro and a howl from Peter. Now, some hooks from the guitar grab you with great rhythms, bass, and drums. Vampire! is screamed with some distortion, making it sound spookier. Lots of howling and can't-miss guitar licks finish it off.

The Man They Couldn't Hang... is an excellent and colorful recording that combines so many genres; it's a wonder they do it so well. I am not surprised, and that is precisely why, after discovering them last year through Svart Records' promo for Chupacabra, Hate & Fight, they are now considered one of my favorite bands.

Surf Instrumental, Rock, Garage Rock Review: Jesus Christ Surferstar - Various Artists

This is not just a track-by-track duplicate of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Jesus Christ Superstar. The title of each song may be the same, but the interpretation is refreshingly unique. The first thing that grabs you about this 2-disc set is the eye-popping cover; the second is the title Jesus Christ Surferstar

Some folks in a Christian mindset may not take this too kindly, just as I am sure many did when the original soundtrack was released in 1971. Take heart, my friends; it is all for the good of your spirit.

This collection showcases a myriad of artists and musical styles, from veteran surf-instro artists like Susan and the Surftones, Hypnotic V, and Three Piece Suit to names you may not notice so readily, such as the Atomic Mosquitos and the Lava Rats. This diverse lineup offers a good opportunity for these bands and enriches the listening experience with various sounds and styles.

The very first song is by a band called Daikaiju, and they fittingly begin the set with passion and verve, taking on “Overture” as if it was their mission in life to do so. It kicks things off in a way I did not expect. I find it difficult to put into words what I heard. Surf-rock with a futuristic twist is the best way to describe it; it was unlike anything I have ever heard from the surf-instro realm. It is very cool and quite different. I was very pleased with the progressive take on the style, and I hope the genre will be heading in that direction more. If the song indicated growth or the birth of a sub-genre, we have reason to be excited. After that song, you get what you would expectsurf-rock-instro and some vocal tracks with a garage sound to back it all up. Various tracks keep your interest, which can be challenging when assembling many tracks.

Although this music is excellent, some areas could improve with this package. OmOm needs some organization and structure in its presentations. The artwork on their covers is always good, but the layouts on the inner sleeves need a lot of work. It is all far too busy and confusing to the human eye. The fact that the tracks are not numbered makes it challenging to distinguish between each disc, adding to the disarray. It would have been more palatable if all that information was in a booklet and the inner sleeve was dedicated to artwork and production credits.

This essential attention to detail should come as second nature when preparing such a comprehensive music collection. The next step should be the critical details of all the players and talent available. If these aspects can change, the label will fare much better from a marketing standpoint. Other than that, this is an excellent collection of tunes that I plan to have playing in the backyard this summer while barbequing and swimming with the kids!
