Surf Rock Instrumental Review: Various Artists-Deep Eddy Records New Music Sampler 2026

Deep Eddy Records Sampler 2026: The Ultimate Surf Rock Collection | Surf Music & Art

Deep Eddy Records Sampler 2026
 Release Date: February 24, 2026

Label: Deep Eddy Records

Website

Ted James’ label, Deep Eddy Records, has put together a 10-track sampler for surf instrumental fans. It also features his bands, The Nematoads and Squid Vicious.

The KBK kicks it off with a real rocker titled “75878986-26 (Initialize Transmission).” This is a powerful blast of rock to get the blood and waves flowing. Man or Astroman? came to mind a few times, with the background dialogue going on and the way the guitars combined surf and rock elements so impressively.

RAHMUS – “October's Theme” continues the high-energy surf rock.  This one has a different tone and atmosphere with some good echoing reverb. It’s an in-your-face rocker that says Listen! And you will. Tight and musically superb!

The Neptones – “Bikini Atoll” changes direction entirely, taking on a more thematic, western-flavored surf-rock flavor. Then it shifts into a more traditional surf sound, with twangy notes. Solid sounds that create an atmosphere of the first wave, with newer technologies woven in for effect. Very cool.

The Nematoads – “Abdel Jafar, Middle Eastern Spy” flips the script in another direction. After all, this is a sampler of different styles and sub-genres of surf instro. The guitar lures you into another world with a Middle Eastern motif of mystery. This is not your typical two-minute drive; it’s five minutes and four seconds full of complexities and guitar fireworks. The layers of instrumentation keep you captivated from start to finish. This is the best of surf and rock combined.

“Squid Vicious - Ink Jet” is a rhythm-filled, twangy, fast mover with some organ fills here and there. The tremolo parts are very good, and the drums and bass thrive in this environment. Impressive with no filler.

The KBK – “Dare Not Speak Its Name”  is a superb surf rocker that moves at tremendous speed, with tempo changes that highlight its diversity and strength. This is the kind of track that has everything I enjoy about surf instro,

RAHMUS – “No Acceptable Compromise” begins with a quick political statement that is quite humorous. And the track title falls right in line with that opening dialogue. This one is heavy with a pounding bottom end. The guitar’s resonating tones are a highlight.

The Neptones – “Majestic (La Mesa Grande)” goes spaghetti western with rapid picking and runs that keep it all moving, while the drums and bass are restrained, letting the guitars take the lead and painting the necessary scenario.

The Nematoads – “Fleas of 1000 Camels” returns to the desert scenery, with atmospheric sounds as the guitar is the paintbrush and the drums and bass the canvas, all the colors take shape quickly. Here, they take surf instrumental and morph it into something different and mysterious, thanks to excellent musicianship.

Squid Vicious – “Overlord” closes things out with another long stretch at five minutes and four seconds once again. It is interesting how that ended up lasting the same amount of time as the other long burner! The sound begins with hints of days gone by, with many more complexities and layers, including the organ, which complements everything else so well. This is an excellent rocker with all the trimmings. There is no window dressing here; it’s a flat-out rocker with great musicians giving their all on one track. Towards the end, you hear some tremolo, then another switch in tempo, and it takes things into an entirely different direction. Very progressive!

Deep Eddy Records' New Music Sampler 2026 delivers a vibrant journey through 10 tracks that capture the full spectrum of surf instrumental music. With relentless energy and impressive variety, this collection highlights the genre’s evolving sound while staying true to its roots. If you’re looking for a sampler that embodies the spirit and excitement of surf instrumentals, this release more than delivers.

Surf Rock Instrumental Compilation Review: Various Artists- Reverb Brasil - Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe - 2025

Surf Rock Review: Reverb Brasil - Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe 2025

Reverb Brasil - Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe - 2025

Release Date: December 5, 2025

Label: Reverb Brasil

Website

Reverb Brasil - Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe - 2025 first and foremost grabs you with the colorful eye candy of the cover art by Flávio Gatti.

There’s a certain magic in the splashy, haunting ‘drip’ of a reverb tank—a sound forever linked to the California coast. Yet Reverb Brasil has transformed that classic echo into something distinctly their own.

This expansive collection spans everything from hard-hitting rockers to surf-tinged, first-wave-inspired tracks, offering a dynamic listening journey from start to finish. Some songs feature vocals, while others remain rooted in traditional instrumental surf. A few tracks even venture outside the surf instrumental sphere—such as the surprising opener, which feels more at home on a rock compilation. Still, the compilation amply demonstrates the genre’s growing influence beyond California’s sandy shores. And if you speak Spanish, you’ll find extra delight in the lyrics—but even without, the music takes center stage.

The Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe - 2025 compilation soars, blending the nostalgia of classic instrumental surf with the thrill of fresh innovation.

Whether you’re a longtime surf fan or a newcomer, this 25th-anniversary collection bursts with energy, showcasing how Brazil’s surf scene is reaching new heights—no ocean required.

Surf Instrumental Vinyl Review: Various Artists-Four By Four Compilation-7” Blue Vinyl | Surf Music And Art Surf Instrumental Vinyl Review: Various Artists - Four By Four Compilation | Surf Music and Art

Four By Four Complilation
 Release Date: February 9, 2026

Label: Colorado Instrumental Fanzine

Website

Colorado Instrumental Fanzine continues its fine coverage of the surf instrumental genre and community with one-of-a-kind vinyl releases available with their quarterly issues.

This time, we have the Four By Four Compilation, with two tracks on each side, available on iceberg blue or octopus ink black 7” vinyl.

Side A starts with Mark Malibu & The Wasagas with “Great Lake Surfer.” This is a great tune with a retro sound. The guitar’s clear, crisp tones are full of reverb, and the drums and bass are strong, with the beat we have all become accustomed to hearing.

The guitar’s leads are transitioning with a steady, consistent flow. As the sound shifts back and forth, you are transported back to the 60s, where it all began. I enjoyed the sense of nostalgia and how it’s been preserved while keeping the sound fresh and modern with today’s recording techniques.

Humanga Danga is up next with “Red Desert Rampage.” Featuring the rapid tremolo picking and the echoing second layer of guitar. The sounds shift suddenly, with a distinct Middle Eastern flavor and a quicker tempo. The guitar work is intricate, rhythmic, and unrelenting.  A very atmospheric track with rich color and cinematic excitement.

Sys Malakian kicks off side B with “Idilio.” Sys is a respected community member and Zine reviewer. His sound is idyllic for the lovers of the surf instro genre. He expertly blends traditional and modern sounds into his music. This is one example of his dexterity on the six-string. This is a fast mover, with the guitar’s subtle intricacies highlighted throughout.  It is like getting into the wayback machine in a modern studio setting. The replication of the classic surf sound is a specialty for Sys, and that is why he has such respect from fellow musicians and listeners alike.

The Terra Surfers close out this slice of vinyl with “Solar Vortex.” It begins with small steps to an eventual sound that gives it a mysterious sci-fi feel, which is the intent here. Being a vortex is an “out there” thing when one imagines it in the mind’s eye. The guitar’s resonant tones and layered effect, along with crashing cymbals and a thumping bass, hold you spellbound from start to finish. A great musical climax to close the curtain on this short trip around the world of surf instro.

Four By Four delivers everything that makes surf instrumental music essential: masterful musicianship, limited-edition vinyl pressed in iceberg blue or octopus ink black, stunning artwork, and four distinct artists each commanding their own vision of the genre. From retro reverence to sci-fi experimentation, this compilation captures the full spectrum of modern surf rock. If you’re serious about the genre, this is mandatory listening—don’t let this one slip away.

Surf-Rock-Instrumental Review: Various Artists - An Evening in Nivram-A Tribute to The Shadows

Release Date: August 19, 2022

Label:  Musick Recordings

Website

Back in 2000, I had the pleasure of covering the original release of An Evening in Nivram-A Tribute to The Shadows. Now, twenty-two years later, a remastered version arrived, complete with newly recorded bonus tracks (although it's been 3 years since its release, it is worth revisiting).

The CD is available in a limited edition with autographs, and the digital version on Bandcamp includes six bonus tracks exclusive to the digital release. This brings the total number of tracks to 29. However, I received the CD version with 22 tracks to listen to and discover. This version includes the 11 bonus tracks that were recorded for the 2022 release.

Now, let’s delve into the bonus tracks I have yet to experience, sparking a sense of anticipation and excitement among us all!

“DANNY AMIS & TWIN TONES – FBI” is the first entry. It starts with a horn and some twangy country-inflected guitar lines. The sound effects are all created using instruments, such as a gun going off, etc. Even though it’s the FBI, it feels more like a spaghetti western track on steroids. It moves right along with energy and atmosphere.

“DRACULINA - JET BLACK” is a familiar tune, and I must say, they’ve done a commendable job in paying homage to the original release. The guitar, as always, takes the spotlight, executed with echoing, twangy reverb, and some superb bass and drums serving as the backbone. It’s a rendition that’s sure to be appreciated by fans of the original.

“THE BOSS MARTIANS - SCOTCH ON THE SOCKS / 36-24-36 (MEDLEY)” will be appreciated by all the rockers out there. The bass and drums kick in as the guitar starts screaming with a wah-wah effect. Some words are inserted like “Going down to see my baby,” with a gruff in the belly style. The guitar really takes off in this composition. This is instrumental rock, but it transitions to a surfier riff in the second half of the medley, with a brief burst of “Tequila” added for flavor. Yes, it cranks!

“THE SPACE COSSACKS - FIND ME A GOLDEN STREET” is the ultra-talented Ivan Pongracic. Get ready for some tasty guitar licks. Ivan was strongly influenced by The Shadows thanks to his father playing their music. And as they say, the rest is history, with all his contributions to the genre. This was played with love and respect for this music, and not to mention, done to perfection.

“HYPNOMEN – APACHE” does a great job on this all-time classic. It’s different, with some interesting sound effects courtesy of the guitar. The organ is very retro sounding, making it a perfect fit to accompany their own take on this. Lots of music packed into this one in under four minutes. There is an interesting step away, eventually sounding more blues-oriented and jamming. Very cool guitar licks to put the icing on the cake to finish it off.

“MARTIN CILIA – DIAMONDS” - Martin continues to impress with everything he produces. The sounds are retro with a twangy country sound, and each note reverberates wonderfully. Bass and drums are also key here. Excellent work.

THE MADEIRA - THE FRIGHTENED CITY brings back Ivan again with one of his fabulous bands. Their sound is full and explosive. Guitars are flying on this with different layers and tempos as the drums and bass do a great job of keeping this locomotive musical machine running at top speed. Wow!

“DRACULINA - THE STRANGER” continues to make its mark on surf, rock, and instro genres. The guitars rule once again. The leads are reverberating as the rhythm keeps a steady layer beneath. The drums and bass are strong and provide more than support or embellishment. They are a highlight just as much as the guitars. You will be reminded of the first wave, but with a more modern touch and production that is crisp and biting, yet musically potent, like waves hitting the beach. Superbly done!

“THE TROUBADOURS - THE LOST CITY” kicks right into high gear at the outset. The sound is retro and new at the same time. This is tasteful but rocking enough to turn your head. The drums are killer, pounding away as the bass lays down a solid line. Guitars and reverb!

“WAVE ELECTRIC - WALKIN'” is an Italian band I recently discovered thanks to Musick Recordings boss Art Bourasseau. This is surf rock at a fast gallop. Their energy is non-stop, so pay attention and follow the grooves. They get in the pocket with the bass and drums, as the guitar flies by like a bullet, and then they slow it down and do it tastefully as well. The many phases of their music are something to admire, as well as how they can pack it all into one track.

THE MARTINETS - DON’T MAKE MY BABY BLUE is a step away from everything I have heard until now. A straight-ahead, rocking guitar accompanies vocals. This takes a song and injects it with extra energy, featuring loud and proud guitar, drums, and bass. The vocals are also perfect for the music. If you love to rock, this is your track!

“INSECT SURFERS - THUNDERBIRDS THEME” is an instrumental gem. Dave Arnson and his band are one of the progenitors of the second wave. The combination of driving rock elements and surf is executed exceptionally well, with a lot of melody. Any track I have ever heard resonates with me. They are very original, and when you listen to them, it’s instant gratification.

An Evening in Nivram-A Tribute to The Shadows version two was more than just a fun listen. It was a thrilling experience. The remastering and addition of all the bonus tracks have truly elevated the album, further solidifying The Shadows’ legacy. I can’t help but wonder if this gem will eventually come out on vinyl. If it does, I have no doubt it will be a sell-out success.

Surf Instrumental Compilation Review: Can't Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 - Various Artists

Release Date: August 1, 2025

Label: Hitchslap Records

Website

There is nothing like a surf instro compilation to “wet” your appetite for the genre, and one with some eye-catching artwork that pulls you right in.

Hitchslap Records has put together a 14-track taster titled Can’t Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 to discover some bands that may be new to you and to revisit some that are not.  This will resonate with listeners and bands all over the world. The variety and genre-bending tracks never let up. Take it for a test drive, but beware, some twists and turns come up on your fast!

The first band to receive instant recognition is at the top of the list, with track #1, the Insect Surfers. They were one of the leaders of surf rock when they arrived on the scene. They formed in Washington, D.C., in 1979. The group bills itself as “Planet Earth’s Longest-Running Modern Surf Band!” I would not argue with that!

Insect Surfers - "Bay of Bengal" kicks things off, and it’s a fantastic start! This is genuine musical artistry at work. Their sound is clear, sharp, and with the shifting guitar notes, it makes for an enjoyable listen — not your typical surf instrumental track, clocking in at 3:40. I had to listen twice; it’s a wave of sound with a powerful rhythm section. Their position in the community was established decades ago, and this track confirms they haven’t missed a step and are a flexible group of musicians. This fleeting surf rock instrumental will resonate loudly and clearly! To my ears, this is progressive surf.

Surfer Joe - "Sunset” - Is an excellent addition to this comp. Everyone knows who this man is! He does a lot for promoting the community and records some great surf instro music. This is a sample of his sound, which is a reach back to the first wave with some new pop and crackle.

Los SuperAvengers (yes, they spell it that way) - "Perfect Wave”- Is another nearly 4-minute exercise of musical prowess. They are all geared up like the legendary Los Straitjackets with their Mexican wrestling masks. They were formed in 2007 in Austin, TX, according to their Facebook page. They have a melodic, fast-moving sound that is very smooth and catchy. This is their own “Perfect Wave” of surf instro that is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

RAHMUS - "Dracula’s Castle" – Is the band with the interesting name and look with their “Ghost” masks, etc., as seen on their banner on Bandcamp. Just one look at that and you’re thinking that they will probably be on the fringes of surf and beyond. And they have a very cool sound! They take rock and reverb and set it to a steady beat with plenty of oomph! Their sound is irresistible and contagious.

The Invincible Speed Holes - "The Plague" -They are all out rockin’ surf comparable to Man or Astroman? Some serious guitar explosions occur during this track. It was like punk meets surf rock, with a crushing rhythm section that was powerful.

Nuclear Juarez - "Spy School Dropout" – Here we go with some surf spy music! Have to love these surf variations you can listen to. A band with another great name! Here we get back to the little over 2-minute jaunt, jam-packed with high-energy surf instro. Fast-moving and full of melody, they get it done. Their nuclear reaction ticks, and the bomb explodes to end the track, how appropriate considering their name.

Bat City Surfers - "The Lazer's Edge" – Are flat out rockers on this track. Drums and cymbals crash as the guitar cuts away its parts, razor sharp, with some use of a pedal for effects, making it more interesting. They move at hyper speed without coming up for air, then a quick transition to stopping for some commentary and back to their heavy surf rock sound to close it out.

Frank Mustard Project - "Fireball" – Wins the day for weird band names! They get it done in under 2 minutes with a fine guitar run with effects. Twangy and surfing on a monster wave of sound, I love it! The melody is familiar, and it certainly rocks hard.

Matagorda - "They Called Him Raven" – If you’re ready for some surf western spaghetti twang, then this band is your ticket to ride to that atmosphere, and they paint that picture well. Almost 5 minutes, this is the mega track of the comp. They take you through all the paces with their talents and get you right in the mood to go to your TV and look for a good Western! Well done!

The Nematoads - "Difference Engine"  -  I recently had the pleasure of covering this recent release. This one is a real rocker with a soundscape that would fit a movie with intrigue, mystery, guys and dolls, and fast cars. The music is full of cutting-edge guitar licks and effects. Thanks to Ted James at Deep Eddy Records and the guitar player for the band for recommending this fantastic compilation!

JUDODOJO - "First Wave" -Dismisses any idea that surf instro is one-dimensional. The guitar playing is superb on this track, and the rhythm section roars along to complement that transitioning guitar sound. The pedals for guitars are so crucial for this genre, and they make good use of those tools. One wave after another of amazing sounds that will have you diving in for another swim in their massive sound!

Northern Tides - "Route 32" -Has a confident sound with a traditional twist to the approach. A little bit of glissando peppered in there with some excellent guitar runs, all supported by the “surf beat” we are all familiar with. A blast from the past to remember how this all started, thanks, guys!

Sys Malakian - "Old Jaguar Twist" – Brings us back to the first wave with some killer sound. Sys has been making his mark and has the respect of fellow musicians from all over the planet. This is so good! I feel like I just jumped into a time machine, and I am in SoCal on the beach listening to all the favs of the day! Extraordinary musicianship, Sys!

AKAW! - "Invasion Eminent" – This band ends this comp with a bang! I love the way it starts with the voice of an announcer coming on to warn us of a full-scale attack! This is the fun and colorful surf instro music, taking all the elements and wrapping them into one track. They get it done in a little over 2 minutes, which is no easy feat. This is an explosion of sound!

Can’t Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 is fourteen tracks of great music that are consistent, varied, and stay within the surf instrumental arena and sub-genres, which is always great fun. This kind of music injects energy and color into your day, and you’ll find yourself reaching for it again - I can guarantee it!

Surf Instro-Garage Rock Review: Monster Party 2000 - Various Artists

What did you dress up as this Halloween? Did you have enough candy for all the groveling rugrats? None of it matters if you had Monster Party 2000 blaring out into the street. This CD is eerie, scary, and cool all wrapped into one package. Look no further than MuSick Recordings to make every Halloween a real party.

MuSick Recordings, known for its selective approach, doesn’t flood the market with music. Instead, they carefully curate their releases, ensuring that each one is a unique and special addition to your collection.

Some of the best instrumental, garage, and instro artists are gathered together on this CD, offering a diverse range of music styles. From reverb excitement that makes your blood curdle to howling speakers, this CD promises a musical journey that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I guarantee you will be the hippest house on the block if you play this music while the pumpkin is all aglow with its fiendish smile, beckoning the wary to approach your haunted house.

This is no trick, it’s a treat, and it rocks. This bag of treats is jock full of surf-instro, garage, punk, and good old rock and roll to make your party the best in town. Some of the guests are The Boss Martians, known for their high-energy surf rock; The Space Cossacks, masters of instrumental rock; Satan’s Pilgrims, a surf rock band with a spooky twist; Hypnomen, a garage rock-surf-pysch sensation; and Los Straightjackets, a band that combines surf rock with Mexican influences! ...All of the heavy hitters.

This is not just music for a season, my friends, this is kick-ass music that's perfect for any time of year. So, whether it's Halloween, a summer barbecue, or just a regular day when you need a pick-me-up, grab your makeup, costumes, and masks (if necessary) and let’s rock! How can you go wrong when you start the party with the Munsters’ theme?

This was a lot of fun, and that’s what it’s all about. This kind of graveyard bash gets you loosened up right from the start. Let your hair hang down, get down and get weird, and enjoy this ghoulish platter.

It is quite a period to imagine when looking at this album, recorded thirty years ago, then reaching back another 30 or more years to when those songs were released. Now you can relive them in a live setting, in all their glory. That is precisely what you get with Legends of Surf Guitar-Recorded Live at The Lighthouse 1995 on Oglio Records.

The title "Legends of Surf Guitar" pays homage to the influential artists featured on this album, marking it a significant event in the history of surf music. The location was Hermosa Beach, CA, and that was most appropriate.

This 2-LP vinyl set, a must-have for any serious collector, is housed in gatefold sleeves featuring pictures and commentary on the inside. The vinyl is a beautiful, light green, translucent, with superb sound. The gatefold sleeves not only protect the vinyl but also provide a visual treat for the eyes, with rare photographs and insightful commentary about the performances.

Many of the tracks on this album are the ones that first drew me into the world of surf music. Revisiting them now, in a live setting, is an exhilarating experience. The lineups that provided the entertainment were top-notch, and the sound quality was impeccable. If I were to sum it up in a tagline, I'd say, “It’s a riptide of surf instrumental that will pull you out and drown you in reverb.” What a way to go, right?

All the tracks are short but very impactful, and the best way to describe them is to do it the same way: short, sweet, and to the point. The brevity of the tracks adds to the album's energy and keeps the listener engaged, with each track delivering a punchy, memorable performance.

Tracks 1-10 by Paul Johnson and The Packards:

“Lanky Bones” brings on an explosive start to the proceedings, and I would not have expected anything less. This is surf rock, and I detected a hint of country flavor around the edges, which came as a surprise but was nevertheless a welcome one.

“Andele” is twangy with a great beat set behind the guitar. The steady bottom end holds it all together nicely.

“Windshield Wiper” is filled with hooks and sparkling reverb as it slides right into “Joyful Blues,” which is filled with clean licks and no tricks. I was reminded fondly of Danny Gatton.

“Apache” is classic surf instro! I love the irresistible riff, featuring some rapid picking that emulates the sound of a rider on his horse leaving a trail of dust behind. Think The Ventures and The Shadows on this one, at least that came to mind for my ears. Both bands covered it, and many have followed suit.

“Tally Ho” features a dueling guitar sound, followed by a switch to a strong lead run and fine rhythm backing, creating the surf instro foundation that all the great tracks have. They are totally in the groove and sound like a musical machine on fire!

“Armor of Light” is a real toe-tapper with superior rhythms, featuring a quick, rapid-fire drum fill for added excitement to end side one.

“Kami Kaze” opens side two soaked in reverb, followed by a splash of instrumental greatness.

“Squad Car” features a saxophone that provides the siren sound and a very familiar riff to all of us surf fans. It is surf instro in hyperdrive.

“Mr. Moto” is a Paul Johnson classic. They remake it live to perfection!

“Peter Gunn/Baby Elephant Walk” and “Blues Theme” bring back Davie Allan & The Arrows, and they nail it down. You get the best of both worlds with surf/spy sounds, then some real string bending sounding like a bee ready to sting! Then, some heavy fuzz steps away from surf instro and sounds more like rock with attitude, without uttering a word as side two comes to an end.

Side Three introduces The Chantays as “Killer Dana,” reminding us of the first wave of surf again. Vintage reverb fills the air, featuring some cool transitions, nice picking, and all supported by a steady rhythm section.

“Crystal-T” features some catchy riffing that transitions into more rock-oriented leads. I enjoyed that mixture and the back-and-forth.

“Pipeline” catches that perfect wave of legendary tracks that never seem to get old; it's timeless.

If you like reverb+, you will love it!

“Green Room” is a high-energy rocker with a tight rhythm section.

Jim Masoner (The Lively Ones) comes on stage and kicks it off with “Surf Rider.” Another can’t miss classic and a standard for the “first wave” set list—an unmistakable riff and one short part where the guitar screams, which catches you off guard. Then “Happy Gremmie” closes side three with some red-hot leads.

Bob Dalley (The Surf Raiders) opens side four with “Curl Rider,” featuring a strong bass part. The track then cranks up with superb reverb-laden guitar leads, a brief rapid drum fill, and some fast picking.

John Blair (Jon & The Nightriders), who started the second wave of surf, was a producer of this project with Matt Linett. The track begins with some powerful drums and bass on “Rumble at Waikiki.” The reverberating guitar notes put you smack in the middle of the rumble. The atmosphere is cinematic as you imagine the huge waves in Hawaii at their peak, where only a few dare to surf.

“Geronimo” has some guitars meshing nicely as the tribal beat of the room fills the hall.

Bob Demmon (Astronauts) is off to a strong start with the classic “Baja,” a perfect surf instro tune. The irresistible rhythms and leads are excellent!

“Movin’” begins with a bass line, something unusual on this recording, as the guitar rings out with clear and crisp hooks.

“Hot Doggin’” is your typical fast-moving surf, equaling the thundering waves hitting the beach at high tide. This is the sound of the genre and the culture.

Now, to end things properly with Jim Pash (Surfaris), we have the most recognizable and probably the most famous song of the genre, “Wipe Out.” This all-time great tune is known for its brisk drum parts and the crazed cackle saying, “Wipe Out,” this time courtesy of Bob Dalley. You can hear the crowd hooting and hollering—a perfect ending to one amazing recording.

Legends of Surf Guitar-Recorded Live at The Lighthouse 1995 is sure to become an instant hit and collectors' item. There are only 500 copies available, so get yours before it becomes an overpriced, out-of-reach after-market item.

Surf Rock Instro Review: Swivlin Wahine - Various Artists

What do we have here? Another surf-instro compilation called Swivlin Wahine? Yes indeed, and a double CD! Skully Records has outdone everyone this year with a double whammy of some of the best surf, instro, and garage music put together on one disc.

35 tracks of great music that evoke images of beach culture, loud guitars, and beautifully tanned beach bunnies waiting for their heroes to come in from the thundering waves.

Whether you're looking back in time or thinking about the present day, it all stands for the same thing: loud music and fun in the sun. As plain and simple as the music that drives the stories, this is music to relate to. If you live in Minnesota or California, it doesn't matter. Anyone with an ounce of Americana running through their veins can find some pleasure in this music. I love it, and I always have. I'm sure you will too.

You will recognize some of the names, while others may be unfamiliar. Some of the heavyweights of the genre make an appearance…Slacktone, The Balboas, The Exotics, The Aquamen, and Plank. The list is endless. Even the tracks with vocals, which are often overlooked, are of exceptional quality. Now that says a mouthful regarding the quality and consistency of this recording. This CD doesn't lack in any areas; it's a real keeper. Now go get your Wahine Swivlin!

Surf Instro Review: Swingin' Creepers! : A Tribute To The Ventures-Various Artists

At long last, the iconic Ventures receive the tribute they genuinely deserve. MuSick Recordings has masterfully crafted one of the most influential and impeccably produced tributes of the year, a testament to the Ventures' enduring legacy with Swingin' Creepers! : A Tribute To The Ventures.

The Ventures' legacy goes back 40 years now. The young and the restless pay homage to the Godfathers of the instrumental surf genre. The only artist who comes close to the Ventures' age group is Davie Allan; even Davie might have learned a few things from the magicians of the Northwest.

The Space Cossacks kick it off appropriately with "Journey To The Stars."  It's a rousing, reverb-filled jaunt that takes you to the farthest reaches of the instro universe. The Cossack's guitar man, Ivan Pongracic, is one of the best players in the world, and he proves it on that number. (Ever listen to Interstellar Stomp?).

After that tremendous intro, it never lets up. Every track is a sonic adventure with plenty of reverb-drenched guitar that would please any surf instro lover. Just look at all the great groups that contributed tracks! All the best today, giving their utmost best to the legends of instrumental music. 23 tracks of pure intro dynamite.

You will recognize the names-Jon and The Nightriders, Satan’s Pilgrims, The Hypnomen, The Boss Martians, The Bomboras, and the list goes on and on. Everyone involved does an outstanding job.

I know the Ventures are thrilled and honored by this release. The contributing artists must be honored to participate in such a stellar project. Can you imagine the thrill of being in a surf or instrumental group and getting a call to contribute to a CD of this magnitude? What a highlight of a career.

Quality is the primary focus here. MuSick Recordings epitomizes quality projects, and this one is their crowning glory. Want to listen to the new breed and hear their interpretations of the classic instrumental sound? This is the one CD you cannot do without this Summer.
