Surf Instrumental Compilation Review: Can't Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 - Various Artists

Release Date: August 1, 2025

Label: Hitchslap Records

Website

There is nothing like a surf instro compilation to “wet” your appetite for the genre, and one with some eye-catching artwork that pulls you right in.

Hitchslap Records has put together a 14-track taster titled Can’t Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 to discover some bands that may be new to you and to revisit some that are not.  This will resonate with listeners and bands all over the world. The variety and genre-bending tracks never let up. Take it for a test drive, but beware, some twists and turns come up on your fast!

The first band to receive instant recognition is at the top of the list, with track #1, the Insect Surfers. They were one of the leaders of surf rock when they arrived on the scene. They formed in Washington, D.C., in 1979. The group bills itself as “Planet Earth’s Longest-Running Modern Surf Band!” I would not argue with that!

Insect Surfers - "Bay of Bengal" kicks things off, and it’s a fantastic start! This is genuine musical artistry at work. Their sound is clear, sharp, and with the shifting guitar notes, it makes for an enjoyable listen — not your typical surf instrumental track, clocking in at 3:40. I had to listen twice; it’s a wave of sound with a powerful rhythm section. Their position in the community was established decades ago, and this track confirms they haven’t missed a step and are a flexible group of musicians. This fleeting surf rock instrumental will resonate loudly and clearly! To my ears, this is progressive surf.

Surfer Joe - "Sunset” - Is an excellent addition to this comp. Everyone knows who this man is! He does a lot for promoting the community and records some great surf instro music. This is a sample of his sound, which is a reach back to the first wave with some new pop and crackle.

Los SuperAvengers (yes, they spell it that way) - "Perfect Wave”- Is another nearly 4-minute exercise of musical prowess. They are all geared up like the legendary Los Straitjackets with their Mexican wrestling masks. They were formed in 2007 in Austin, TX, according to their Facebook page. They have a melodic, fast-moving sound that is very smooth and catchy. This is their own “Perfect Wave” of surf instro that is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

RAHMUS - "Dracula’s Castle" – Is the band with the interesting name and look with their “Ghost” masks, etc., as seen on their banner on Bandcamp. Just one look at that and you’re thinking that they will probably be on the fringes of surf and beyond. And they have a very cool sound! They take rock and reverb and set it to a steady beat with plenty of oomph! Their sound is irresistible and contagious.

The Invincible Speed Holes - "The Plague" -They are all out rockin’ surf comparable to Man or Astroman? Some serious guitar explosions occur during this track. It was like punk meets surf rock, with a crushing rhythm section that was powerful.

Nuclear Juarez - "Spy School Dropout" – Here we go with some surf spy music! Have to love these surf variations you can listen to. A band with another great name! Here we get back to the little over 2-minute jaunt, jam-packed with high-energy surf instro. Fast-moving and full of melody, they get it done. Their nuclear reaction ticks, and the bomb explodes to end the track, how appropriate considering their name.

Bat City Surfers - "The Lazer's Edge" – Are flat out rockers on this track. Drums and cymbals crash as the guitar cuts away its parts, razor sharp, with some use of a pedal for effects, making it more interesting. They move at hyper speed without coming up for air, then a quick transition to stopping for some commentary and back to their heavy surf rock sound to close it out.

Frank Mustard Project - "Fireball" – Wins the day for weird band names! They get it done in under 2 minutes with a fine guitar run with effects. Twangy and surfing on a monster wave of sound, I love it! The melody is familiar, and it certainly rocks hard.

Matagorda - "They Called Him Raven" – If you’re ready for some surf western spaghetti twang, then this band is your ticket to ride to that atmosphere, and they paint that picture well. Almost 5 minutes, this is the mega track of the comp. They take you through all the paces with their talents and get you right in the mood to go to your TV and look for a good Western! Well done!

The Nematoads - "Difference Engine"  -  I recently had the pleasure of covering this recent release. This one is a real rocker with a soundscape that would fit a movie with intrigue, mystery, guys and dolls, and fast cars. The music is full of cutting-edge guitar licks and effects. Thanks to Ted James at Deep Eddy Records and the guitar player for the band for recommending this fantastic compilation!

JUDODOJO - "First Wave" -Dismisses any idea that surf instro is one-dimensional. The guitar playing is superb on this track, and the rhythm section roars along to complement that transitioning guitar sound. The pedals for guitars are so crucial for this genre, and they make good use of those tools. One wave after another of amazing sounds that will have you diving in for another swim in their massive sound!

Northern Tides - "Route 32" -Has a confident sound with a traditional twist to the approach. A little bit of glissando peppered in there with some excellent guitar runs, all supported by the “surf beat” we are all familiar with. A blast from the past to remember how this all started, thanks, guys!

Sys Malakian - "Old Jaguar Twist" – Brings us back to the first wave with some killer sound. Sys has been making his mark and has the respect of fellow musicians from all over the planet. This is so good! I feel like I just jumped into a time machine, and I am in SoCal on the beach listening to all the favs of the day! Extraordinary musicianship, Sys!

AKAW! - "Invasion Eminent" – This band ends this comp with a bang! I love the way it starts with the voice of an announcer coming on to warn us of a full-scale attack! This is the fun and colorful surf instro music, taking all the elements and wrapping them into one track. They get it done in a little over 2 minutes, which is no easy feat. This is an explosion of sound!

Can’t Surf On A Gas Giant vol.1 is fourteen tracks of great music that are consistent, varied, and stay within the surf instrumental arena and sub-genres, which is always great fun. This kind of music injects energy and color into your day, and you’ll find yourself reaching for it again - I can guarantee it!

Surf Instro-Garage Rock Review: Monster Party 2000 - Various Artists

What did you dress up as this Halloween? Did you have enough candy for all the groveling rugrats? None of it matters if you had Monster Party 2000 blaring out into the street. This CD is eerie, scary, and cool all wrapped into one package. Look no further than MuSick Recordings to make every Halloween a real party.

MuSick Recordings, known for its selective approach, doesn’t flood the market with music. Instead, they carefully curate their releases, ensuring that each one is a unique and special addition to your collection.

Some of the best instrumental, garage, and instro artists are gathered together on this CD, offering a diverse range of music styles. From reverb excitement that makes your blood curdle to howling speakers, this CD promises a musical journey that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I guarantee you will be the hippest house on the block if you play this music while the pumpkin is all aglow with its fiendish smile, beckoning the wary to approach your haunted house.

This is no trick, it’s a treat, and it rocks. This bag of treats is jock full of surf-instro, garage, punk, and good old rock and roll to make your party the best in town. Some of the guests are The Boss Martians, known for their high-energy surf rock; The Space Cossacks, masters of instrumental rock; Satan’s Pilgrims, a surf rock band with a spooky twist; Hypnomen, a garage rock-surf-pysch sensation; and Los Straightjackets, a band that combines surf rock with Mexican influences! ...All of the heavy hitters.

This is not just music for a season, my friends, this is kick-ass music that's perfect for any time of year. So, whether it's Halloween, a summer barbecue, or just a regular day when you need a pick-me-up, grab your makeup, costumes, and masks (if necessary) and let’s rock! How can you go wrong when you start the party with the Munsters’ theme?

This was a lot of fun, and that’s what it’s all about. This kind of graveyard bash gets you loosened up right from the start. Let your hair hang down, get down and get weird, and enjoy this ghoulish platter.

Surf Instro Vinyl Review: Various Artists-Legends of Surf Guitar-Recorded Live at The Lighthouse 1995

Release Date: July 4, 2025

Label: Oglio Records

Buy The Vinyl

It is quite a period to imagine when looking at this album, recorded thirty years ago, then reaching back another 30 or more years to when those songs were released. Now you can relive them in a live setting, in all their glory. That is precisely what you get with Legends of Surf Guitar-Recorded Live at The Lighthouse 1995 on Oglio Records.

The title "Legends of Surf Guitar" pays homage to the influential artists featured on this album, marking it a significant event in the history of surf music. The location was Hermosa Beach, CA, and that was most appropriate.

This 2-LP vinyl set, a must-have for any serious collector, is housed in gatefold sleeves featuring pictures and commentary on the inside. The vinyl is a beautiful, light green, translucent, with superb sound. The gatefold sleeves not only protect the vinyl but also provide a visual treat for the eyes, with rare photographs and insightful commentary about the performances.

Many of the tracks on this album are the ones that first drew me into the world of surf music. Revisiting them now, in a live setting, is an exhilarating experience. The lineups that provided the entertainment were top-notch, and the sound quality was impeccable. If I were to sum it up in a tagline, I'd say, “It’s a riptide of surf instrumental that will pull you out and drown you in reverb.” What a way to go, right?

All the tracks are short but very impactful, and the best way to describe them is to do it the same way: short, sweet, and to the point. The brevity of the tracks adds to the album's energy and keeps the listener engaged, with each track delivering a punchy, memorable performance.

Tracks 1-10 by Paul Johnson and The Packards:

“Lanky Bones” brings on an explosive start to the proceedings, and I would not have expected anything less. This is surf rock, and I detected a hint of country flavor around the edges, which came as a surprise but was nevertheless a welcome one.

“Andele” is twangy with a great beat set behind the guitar. The steady bottom end holds it all together nicely.

“Windshield Wiper” is filled with hooks and sparkling reverb as it slides right into “Joyful Blues,” which is filled with clean licks and no tricks. I was reminded fondly of Danny Gatton.

“Apache” is classic surf instro! I love the irresistible riff, featuring some rapid picking that emulates the sound of a rider on his horse leaving a trail of dust behind. Think The Ventures and The Shadows on this one, at least that came to mind for my ears. Both bands covered it, and many have followed suit.

“Tally Ho” features a dueling guitar sound, followed by a switch to a strong lead run and fine rhythm backing, creating the surf instro foundation that all the great tracks have. They are totally in the groove and sound like a musical machine on fire!

“Armor of Light” is a real toe-tapper with superior rhythms, featuring a quick, rapid-fire drum fill for added excitement to end side one.

“Kami Kaze” opens side two soaked in reverb, followed by a splash of instrumental greatness.

“Squad Car” features a saxophone that provides the siren sound and a very familiar riff to all of us surf fans. It is surf instro in hyperdrive.

“Mr. Moto” is a Paul Johnson classic. They remake it live to perfection!

“Peter Gunn/Baby Elephant Walk” and “Blues Theme” bring back Davie Allan & The Arrows, and they nail it down. You get the best of both worlds with surf/spy sounds, then some real string bending sounding like a bee ready to sting! Then, some heavy fuzz steps away from surf instro and sounds more like rock with attitude, without uttering a word as side two comes to an end.

Side Three introduces The Chantays as “Killer Dana,” reminding us of the first wave of surf again. Vintage reverb fills the air, featuring some cool transitions, nice picking, and all supported by a steady rhythm section.

“Crystal-T” features some catchy riffing that transitions into more rock-oriented leads. I enjoyed that mixture and the back-and-forth.

“Pipeline” catches that perfect wave of legendary tracks that never seem to get old; it's timeless.

If you like reverb+, you will love it!

“Green Room” is a high-energy rocker with a tight rhythm section.

Jim Masoner (The Lively Ones) comes on stage and kicks it off with “Surf Rider.” Another can’t miss classic and a standard for the “first wave” set list—an unmistakable riff and one short part where the guitar screams, which catches you off guard. Then “Happy Gremmie” closes side three with some red-hot leads.

Bob Dalley (The Surf Raiders) opens side four with “Curl Rider,” featuring a strong bass part. The track then cranks up with superb reverb-laden guitar leads, a brief rapid drum fill, and some fast picking.

John Blair (Jon & The Nightriders), who started the second wave of surf, was a producer of this project with Matt Linett. The track begins with some powerful drums and bass on “Rumble at Waikiki.” The reverberating guitar notes put you smack in the middle of the rumble. The atmosphere is cinematic as you imagine the huge waves in Hawaii at their peak, where only a few dare to surf.

“Geronimo” has some guitars meshing nicely as the tribal beat of the room fills the hall.

Bob Demmon (Astronauts) is off to a strong start with the classic “Baja,” a perfect surf instro tune. The irresistible rhythms and leads are excellent!

“Movin’” begins with a bass line, something unusual on this recording, as the guitar rings out with clear and crisp hooks.

“Hot Doggin’” is your typical fast-moving surf, equaling the thundering waves hitting the beach at high tide. This is the sound of the genre and the culture.

Now, to end things properly with Jim Pash (Surfaris), we have the most recognizable and probably the most famous song of the genre, “Wipe Out.” This all-time great tune is known for its brisk drum parts and the crazed cackle saying, “Wipe Out,” this time courtesy of Bob Dalley. You can hear the crowd hooting and hollering—a perfect ending to one amazing recording.

Legends of Surf Guitar-Recorded Live at The Lighthouse 1995 is sure to become an instant hit and collectors' item. There are only 500 copies available, so get yours before it becomes an overpriced, out-of-reach after-market item.

Surf Rock Instro Review: Swivlin Wahine - Various Artists

What do we have here? Another surf-instro compilation called Swivlin Wahine? Yes indeed, and a double CD! Skully Records has outdone everyone this year with a double whammy of some of the best surf, instro, and garage music put together on one disc.

35 tracks of great music that evoke images of beach culture, loud guitars, and beautifully tanned beach bunnies waiting for their heroes to come in from the thundering waves.

Whether you're looking back in time or thinking about the present day, it all stands for the same thing: loud music and fun in the sun. As plain and simple as the music that drives the stories, this is music to relate to. If you live in Minnesota or California, it doesn't matter. Anyone with an ounce of Americana running through their veins can find some pleasure in this music. I love it, and I always have. I'm sure you will too.

You will recognize some of the names, while others may be unfamiliar. Some of the heavyweights of the genre make an appearance…Slacktone, The Balboas, The Exotics, The Aquamen, and Plank. The list is endless. Even the tracks with vocals, which are often overlooked, are of exceptional quality. Now that says a mouthful regarding the quality and consistency of this recording. This CD doesn't lack in any areas; it's a real keeper. Now go get your Wahine Swivlin!

Surf Instro Review: Swingin' Creepers! : A Tribute To The Ventures-Various Artists

At long last, the iconic Ventures receive the tribute they genuinely deserve. MuSick Recordings has masterfully crafted one of the most influential and impeccably produced tributes of the year, a testament to the Ventures' enduring legacy with Swingin' Creepers! : A Tribute To The Ventures.

The Ventures' legacy goes back 40 years now. The young and the restless pay homage to the Godfathers of the instrumental surf genre. The only artist who comes close to the Ventures' age group is Davie Allan; even Davie might have learned a few things from the magicians of the Northwest.

The Space Cossacks kick it off appropriately with "Journey To The Stars."  It's a rousing, reverb-filled jaunt that takes you to the farthest reaches of the instro universe. The Cossack's guitar man, Ivan Pongracic, is one of the best players in the world, and he proves it on that number. (Ever listen to Interstellar Stomp?).

After that tremendous intro, it never lets up. Every track is a sonic adventure with plenty of reverb-drenched guitar that would please any surf instro lover. Just look at all the great groups that contributed tracks! All the best today, giving their utmost best to the legends of instrumental music. 23 tracks of pure intro dynamite.

You will recognize the names-Jon and The Nightriders, Satan’s Pilgrims, The Hypnomen, The Boss Martians, The Bomboras, and the list goes on and on. Everyone involved does an outstanding job.

I know the Ventures are thrilled and honored by this release. The contributing artists must be honored to participate in such a stellar project. Can you imagine the thrill of being in a surf or instrumental group and getting a call to contribute to a CD of this magnitude? What a highlight of a career.

Quality is the primary focus here. MuSick Recordings epitomizes quality projects, and this one is their crowning glory. Want to listen to the new breed and hear their interpretations of the classic instrumental sound? This is the one CD you cannot do without this Summer.

Surf Instro Review: Surf Monsters - Various Artists

The tsunami called Del-Fi comes crashing back with an incredible testament to the talent flourishing in the surf music community today. Surf Monsters, a compilation of various artists, is not just another surf album.

It's a unique blend of vintage and modern surf music, providing fresh sound waves that intrigue and excite any surf music enthusiast. It comes rumbling through on the latest sonic delight, adding to the music's ever-growing popularity.

Del-Fi is the unequivocal king of the surf comps. What makes it interesting are the essential ingredients of vintage surf from the sixties.

Let us not forget the music's forefathers, but can we? True to form concerning surf culture, the artwork of Surf Monsters is not just colorful, it's a vibrant reflection of the sixties. It's a visual journey that will make any surf music enthusiast feel nostalgic and connected to the era.

Flaming, pounding, savage, and manic guitars fill this disc. The second time around, I realized I was listening to one phenomenal group of songs.

If this is where surf music is headed, I'll be along for the ride. I hope it lasts forever! This is a brilliant foray into reverb-soaked twang, characterized by reverb and a distinctive guitar sound.

Like the wild and untamed wave, surf music takes you for one hell of a ride, magical and timeless like nature itself.

Surf Monsters is where music meets art and combines for a complete cultural experience.

Surf Instro Review: Music From The Motion Picture Pulp Fiction-Various Artists

Music From The Motion Picture Pulp Fiction- Various Artists has successfully revived the golden era of Surf music, bringing back the nostalgic tunes that once resonated with America's youth.

The Movie, in my opinion, was a disappointment; however, as we all know, it has become a cult classic.  It was not too long ago that it was reissued on vinyl, which I snagged up!

My favorite scene was when Travolta and Thurman were at Jack Rabbit Slims, for some reason, which stuck in my mind. Those too sitting there wasted on heroin, sipping their milkshakes, was all too real, and a tribute to some good acting.

The soundtrack is a shining beacon in an otherwise lackluster project. It's worth noting that the first track contains movie dialogue, so exercise caution if you have children around. Despite this, it's a fantastic soundtrack that truly does justice to Surf music!

Music legends have created some of the most excellent songs.  If you've watched TV lately, you can hear how Surf has worked its way into commercials, more and more all the time. I think it's excellent! Thank you, Pulp Fiction.

Surf Instro Review: Pulp Surfin' - Various Artists

Pulp Surfin' is one of my all-time favorite comps from Donna Records/Del-Fi. It's great rockin' instrumental surf music put together by the best, Del-Fi.

Frank Zappa (Mr. Guy) contributes here with "Letter From Jeppers." Frank was all over the place, wasn't he?

If you like exotica-type tunes, check out "Full Moon." It's very different.

A rare track shows up by The Bobby Fuller Four doing Dick Dale's "Misirlou" live—a real treat! All the other tracks are exceptional as well.

Sometimes, certain CDs just become your favorites; this one is mine! It features updated versions of older songs and original oldies—a nice mixture.

Surf-Rock-Pop Review: Shots In The Dark - Various Artists

The resurgence of Del-Fi has significantly contributed to the growth of the surf music genre. They are a quality outfit.  Shots In The Dark is more progressive '90s new wave surf—great blends of guitar, organ, and the ever-present thundering drums.

This is not traditional surf instro by any means. I like the CD. I like just about everything that Del-Fi puts out, anyway. This is different, which is why I enjoy it so much.

Del-Fi's reinterpretation of old classics with a modern twist, making them sound more contemporary, is a fascinating aspect of their music. And who's the stunning woman on the cover? None other than Bob Keane's (Owner of Del-Fi) daughter!

She looks like she is waiting for 007. And while waiting, would you like a drink? Oh, yes, shaken, not stirred, please.

Surf Instro Review: Monster Summer Hits Wild Surf- Various Artists

This is not just music; it's a fun in-the-sun party! I have noticed that children tend to enjoy this type of music. My five-year-old son can't get enough of it! Thanks to Dad, he has received good training in surf music.

Monster Summer Hits: Wild Surf - Various Artists is packed with hits.

The best thing about surfing comps is that every song is generally around two minutes or so long, so the listener benefits from getting a CD with 26 tracks. Loaded with hits.

Take a look at the cover of the classic 1960s surf art. You know, I remember when my brother would get all those models to put together and paint, including the crazy monsters and rat finks. Man, those were the days!

Note: This was my first year of writing reviews, so it is rudimentary; however, I did my best to edit it for improvement.

Surf Instrumental, Rock, Garage Rock Review: Jesus Christ Surferstar - Various Artists

This is not just a track-by-track duplicate of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Jesus Christ Superstar. The title of each song may be the same, but the interpretation is refreshingly unique. The first thing that grabs you about this 2-disc set is the eye-popping cover; the second is the title Jesus Christ Surferstar

Some folks in a Christian mindset may not take this too kindly, just as I am sure many did when the original soundtrack was released in 1971. Take heart, my friends; it is all for the good of your spirit.

This collection showcases a myriad of artists and musical styles, from veteran surf-instro artists like Susan and the Surftones, Hypnotic V, and Three Piece Suit to names you may not notice so readily, such as the Atomic Mosquitos and the Lava Rats. This diverse lineup offers a good opportunity for these bands and enriches the listening experience with various sounds and styles.

The very first song is by a band called Daikaiju, and they fittingly begin the set with passion and verve, taking on “Overture” as if it was their mission in life to do so. It kicks things off in a way I did not expect. I find it difficult to put into words what I heard. Surf-rock with a futuristic twist is the best way to describe it; it was unlike anything I have ever heard from the surf-instro realm. It is very cool and quite different. I was very pleased with the progressive take on the style, and I hope the genre will be heading in that direction more. If the song indicated growth or the birth of a sub-genre, we have reason to be excited. After that song, you get what you would expectsurf-rock-instro and some vocal tracks with a garage sound to back it all up. Various tracks keep your interest, which can be challenging when assembling many tracks.

Although this music is excellent, some areas could improve with this package. OmOm needs some organization and structure in its presentations. The artwork on their covers is always good, but the layouts on the inner sleeves need a lot of work. It is all far too busy and confusing to the human eye. The fact that the tracks are not numbered makes it challenging to distinguish between each disc, adding to the disarray. It would have been more palatable if all that information was in a booklet and the inner sleeve was dedicated to artwork and production credits.

This essential attention to detail should come as second nature when preparing such a comprehensive music collection. The next step should be the critical details of all the players and talent available. If these aspects can change, the label will fare much better from a marketing standpoint. Other than that, this is an excellent collection of tunes that I plan to have playing in the backyard this summer while barbequing and swimming with the kids!
